It is used as a tool for product manufacturing quality control in the food and beverage industry. DBR-1 from Starr Instruemnts is a compact, digital handheld Refractometer that measure sugars and TDS (total dissolved solids) in aqueous solutions in % Brix.

Featuring a wide measurement range of 0-50% along with Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) samples can be acurately tested up to 70°C. 

To use the refractometer pipette 2~3 drops of sample onto the prism and press the start button.  A Brix % result and temperature will be displayed in 3 seconds. It is good practice to take further measurements to ensure the temperature of the sample has stabilized to the prism for increased accuracy.

Examples of use include using for quality assessment on production line, batch mixing and sample evaluation.

Use on the farm, or at the markets to determine fruit and vegetable quality and ripeness.

In restaurants and catering check your seasoning of sauces, condiments and more.

Farmers can also determine the quality of their livestock's colostrum to ensure that calves are receiving sufficient antibodies (lgL) for successful transfer of passive immunity. A Brix result of 22% or higher is considered to be high quality.
